Scope of application
Petrochemical industry: Used for storing various liquid materials such as crude oil, finished oil, and chemical raw materials, as well as conducting processes like atmospheric pressure reaction, mixing, and separation.
Food processing industry: For example, storing food raw materials and finished products such as fruit juice, milk, and edible oil, as well as being used in processes like food fermentation, stirring, and blending.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing industry: Used for storing pharmaceutical raw materials, intermediates, and finished products, as well as conducting processes such as pharmaceutical preparation, mixing, and filling.
How it works
Design pressure (gauge pressure):
According to national standards (e.g., NB/T 47003.1-2022), the design pressure range of atmospheric pressure vessels is -0.02MPa < design pressure < 0.1MPa.
Positive pressure upper limit: Less than 0.1MPa (i.e., not exceeding atmospheric pressure + 0.1MPa). If it reaches or exceeds 0.1MPa, it falls into the category of pressure vessels.
Negative pressure lower limit: Greater than -0.02MPa (i.e., not lower than atmospheric pressure - 0.02MPa), to avoid container instability caused by excessive negative pressure.
Operating pressure: The actual pressure of the internal medium during the normal use of the vessel, which must be less than the design pressure to ensure a safety margin.
Cylindrical vessels:
Diameter (inner diameter): Common range is 0.5m - 50m (small storage tanks such as metering tanks have smaller diameters, while large-scale storage tanks can reach dozens of meters in diameter).
Height (or length): Designed according to volume requirements, generally 1m - 30m, which needs to be determined in combination with supporting methods (e.g., vertical, horizontal).
Wall thickness: Determined by calculations based on medium pressure, weight, material strength, etc. The wall thickness of carbon steel vessels is usually 4mm - 20mm; for corrosive media or large vessels, it may be thicker (subject to strength check).
Rectangular vessels:
Length, width, height: Designed according to installation space and volume, with common size ranges from 1m×1m×1m to 10m×5m×5m. Due to the poor force-bearing performance of rectangular structures, their dimensions are usually smaller than those of cylindrical vessels.
Volume: Ranging from dozens of liters to tens of thousands of cubic meters. Small vessels (e.g., laboratory storage tanks) can have a volume as small as 0.1 m³, while large-scale oil storage tanks, water tanks, etc., can reach a volume of over 10^4 m³.
Design temperature: The maximum or minimum temperature that the vessel may reach during normal operation, which needs to cover extreme conditions of the operating temperature.
Normal temperature working conditions: The design temperature of most atmospheric pressure vessels is -20ºC to 200ºC (applicable to water, oils, ordinary chemical media, etc.).
Special working conditions: For example, when storing high-temperature media (such as hot water, hot oil), the design temperature can be increased to 200ºC to 400ºC (high-temperature resistant materials, such as heat-resistant steel, need to be selected); for low-temperature media (such as low-temperature brine), the design temperature may be as low as -40ºC to -20ºC (material low-temperature brittleness should be considered).

Material grades:
Carbon steel: Q235B, Q355B, etc. (suitable for non-corrosive media such as clean water and crude oil).
Stainless steel: 304, 316, etc. (suitable for corrosive media or hygienic scenarios such as food and pharmaceutical industries).
Others: Aluminum, FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic), plastics (e.g., PP (polypropylene), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), suitable for low-pressure and weakly corrosive scenarios).
Material properties: Need to meet requirements for strength (tensile strength, yield strength), corrosion resistance (e.g., chromium and nickel content in stainless steel), and weldability. Specific indicators must comply with material standards (e.g., GB/T 700, GB/T 3280).
Breather valve: Used to balance the pressure inside and outside the vessel, preventing overpressure or negative pressure. Its opening pressure should be slightly higher than the vessel's design pressure (e.g., the opening pressure of positive pressure breather valves ≤ 0.09MPa).
Liquid level gauge: Its measurement range must cover the effective height of the vessel, and the accuracy is determined according to metering requirements (e.g., ±10mm).
Manhole / handhole: Sizes are designed based on maintenance requirements, with common diameters ranging from 400mm to 600mm, facilitating personnel entry or component installation.
Medium type: Liquids (water, oil, chemicals), gases (atmospheric air, inert gases), solids (granules, powders), or mixed media.
Corrosivity: Factors such as the medium's pH value and whether it contains chloride ions determine the material's corrosion resistance grade (e.g., strongly corrosive media require stainless steel or lining materials).
Toxicity / Flammability: For toxic media (such as certain chemical raw materials) or flammable media (such as gasoline, alcohol), additional requirements for sealing performance (e.g., using mechanical seals) and safety accessories (e.g., breather valves, flame arresters) are needed.
