1, Core Working Principle of Fans

The operation of a fan is based on the principle of fluid dynamics. The core process consists of 3 key steps. Although the detailed principles vary slightly among different types of fans, the overall logic remains consistent:

1. Suction Process

The motor drives the impeller to rotate at high speed. The gas between the impeller blades rotates synchronously with the impeller, and is thrown toward the edge of the impeller (or pushed axially) under the action of centrifugal force (or axial thrust), resulting in a low-pressure zone at the center of the impeller. Driven by the pressure difference between atmospheric pressure and the low-pressure zone, external gas is sucked into the center of the impeller through the air inlet.

2. Energy Conversion Process

During the rotation of the impeller, the sucked gas is continuously pushed and compressed by the blades, with its kinetic energy (velocity) and pressure energy increasing steadily. When the gas reaches the edge of the impeller (or the axial outlet), it already has relatively high velocity and pressure.

3. Discharge Process

The gas with high kinetic energy and pressure energy enters the volute (or guide vane) of the fan. The cross-sectional area of the volute gradually expands, reducing the gas flow velocity. Part of the kinetic energy is further converted into pressure energy. Finally, the gas is discharged from the air outlet at a stable pressure and flow rate, and delivered to pipelines or the target space.

1. Air Volume Flow Rate

Definition: The volume of gas delivered by a fan per unit time, which is a key indicator for measuring the "delivery scale". It is necessary to distinguish between "actual air volume" (volume under operating conditions) and "standard air volume" (under standard conditions: 101.325 kPa, 20°C, symbol: Nm³/h) - standard air volume facilitates performance comparison under different operating conditions. Common Units: m³/h (mainstream in industrial applications), m³/min, Nm³/h. Characteristic Description: The air volume must be accurately matched to the "gas demand" of the application scenario. Insufficient air volume will lead to delayed gas delivery; excessive air volume will increase energy consumption and noise.

2. Air Pressure

Definition: The pressure exerted by the fan on the gas, used to overcome the total resistance of the gas in the delivery path (such as pipeline friction resistance, filter resistance, process equipment resistance, etc.). It is divided into static pressure (effective pressure to overcome resistance), dynamic pressure (kinetic energy pressure of gas flow), and total pressure (static pressure + dynamic pressure). "Total pressure" or "static pressure" is usually used as the basis for selection (pipeline systems focus more on static pressure, while open spaces focus more on total pressure). Common Units: Pa, kPa (mainstream in industrial applications), mmH2O (traditional engineering unit). Characteristic Description: There is a "negative correlation" between air pressure and air volume - at the same rotation speed, air pressure decreases as air volume increases. If the air pressure is lower than the total system resistance, the gas cannot be delivered effectively (e.g., long-distance pipeline delivery requires higher air pressure). For example, the induced draft fan of a boiler needs to overcome the resistance of dust collectors and desulfurization towers, so its air pressure usually needs to reach 5~15 kPa.

3. Total Pressure Efficiency

Definition: The ratio of the "effective energy" output by the fan (energy used to increase gas pressure and promote gas flow) to the energy input by the motor. It is a core indicator for measuring "energy efficiency" and is expressed as a percentage (%).
Characteristic Description:
  • The efficiency of mainstream industrial fans is mostly 70%~90%, and high-efficiency fans (such as centrifugal fans with optimized impeller profiles) can have an efficiency of over 90%.
  • Efficiency is significantly affected by "operating condition deviations": if the actual air volume deviates from the designed air volume by more than ±10%, the efficiency will decrease significantly (e.g., for a fan with a designed air volume of 10,000 m³/h, if the actual operating air volume is only 5,000 m³/h, the efficiency may drop from 85% to below 60%). Therefore, it is necessary to select fans with a "wide high-efficiency range" to adapt to fluctuations in operating conditions.

4. Shaft Power and Motor Power

Definition:
  • Shaft Power: The power required to be input to the fan's main shaft (the power consumed by the fan itself). The calculation formula is: "Shaft Power = (Air Volume × Total Pressure) / (3600 × Total Pressure Efficiency × Mechanical Efficiency)" (mechanical efficiency refers to the energy loss of bearings and transmission components, usually ranging from 0.95 to 0.98).
  • Motor Power: The rated output power of the supporting motor, which needs to be 10%~20% higher than the shaft power (to reserve a safety margin) to prevent motor overload during fluctuations in operating conditions.
     
    Common Units: kW (for small and medium-sized fans), MW (for large power station fans).
     
    Characteristic Description: Power is positively correlated with air volume and air pressure - as air volume or air pressure increases, power rises significantly (e.g., if the air volume doubles, the power approximately doubles). Therefore, methods such as frequency conversion adjustment should be adopted to avoid energy waste.
